Package Protection Q&A

Tamper evidence and mass serialization are complementary in that both technologies help to protect patients and secure the supply chain. However, they address completely different elements of criminal activity.
Mass serialization protects against counterfeiting and diversion, and is particularly useful against diversion. Diversion can be defined as a legitimate product in an illegitimate market. Tamper evidence protects against, as the name implies, tampering with the product. Examples of criminal tampering include: substituting real drugs with fake drugs, dilution of drug product, or adulterating the drug to cause harm to others.
One other criminal example is that of packaging reuse. I’m not sure whether that falls under tampering or counterfeiting, but we can all agree it is a dangerous fraudulent activity.
To protect patients against the three big threats (counterfeiting, diversion, and tampering) the best packages deploy layered solutions that address all three.
